What My Cats Have Taught Me About Healing

My cats probably think they’re teaching me about snacks and sleeping in sunbeams, but they’ve taught me something much more important — lessons about healing.

Here’s what they’ve shown me…

I’ll be honest — my cats probably think they’re teaching me about the important things in life, like how to demand snacks at all hours, how to find the warmest spot in the house, and how to make a cardboard box the most desirable piece of furniture ever.

And they’re not wrong.

But somewhere between the chaos, the fur, and the 3am zoomies, they’ve also been teaching me lessons I didn’t know I needed.

🐾 **Rest is non-negotiable.**
Cats don’t feel guilty for napping. They don’t think they should be “doing something productive.” They just curl up, close their eyes, and rest. I’m learning to do the same — to give my body and mind permission to stop without guilt.

🐾 **Comfort comes first.**
Whether it’s the perfect patch of sunlight or the cosiest blanket, my cats always find the place that makes them feel safe and warm. Healing isn’t just about working on yourself — it’s about creating spaces that help you feel okay.

🐾 **Be curious.**
Every bag, box, or open cupboard is worth investigating in their world. I’m not about to start climbing into wardrobes, but I am trying to stay open to new experiences, even when I feel stuck.

🐾 **Affection matters.**
Even the most independent cat has moments where they curl up close and purr. They remind me that connection — however small or fleeting — can be deeply healing.

I didn’t expect my cats to be my teachers. But here we are. And while they may be motivated mainly by food and warm laps, they’ve given me something far more valuable: the reminder that healing doesn’t have to be fast, loud, or impressive.

Sometimes, it’s quiet. Soft. And covered in fur. Dx
