Day 4: Navigating the System With a Hidden Disability

When your disability is hidden, you often have to work twice as hard to be believed — especially when navigating systems like benefits, housing, health care, or employment.

You may be told you ‘don’t look sick,’ ‘seem fine,’ or are ‘too articulate’ — as though being ill means losing your ability to speak or try. And that makes navigating support systems deeply frustrating, even retraumatising.

📑 What You Might Need to Apply For:
– **PIP** (Personal Independence Payment) – for daily living and mobility needs
– **Universal Credit** (with Limited Capability for Work element)
– **Blue Badge** – parking support
– **Access to Work** – workplace support
– **Council Tax Reduction** or **Housing Benefit**

🧾 Top Tips for Navigating the System:
– Keep a **symptom diary** — log how your condition affects you day-to-day
– Gather **supporting letters** from GPs, therapists, or support workers
– Don’t downplay your condition — tell the whole truth, even if it’s painful
– Use organisations like **Citizens Advice** or **Fightback4Justice** for help with forms and appeals

📣 If You’re Challenged or Assessed

Hidden disabilities are often questioned. You may be called to a DWP assessment or have to appeal a decision.
– Ask for reasonable adjustments (home visits, support person, extra time)
– Take notes during assessments
– Request everything in writing
– Appeal if the outcome feels wrong — many appeals are successful

💬 Final Words

You shouldn’t have to ‘prove’ your pain. But until the system changes, knowing your rights and having support makes a difference.

If you’re overwhelmed or unsure, you’re not alone. We’re building this space to help make the invisible, visible — and the system a little less daunting.
