Body and Mind: When Mental and Physical Health Collide

At the Mark Hewitson Foundation, we see it all the time — someone comes to us for support after a traumatic event or diagnosis, but the truth is, they’ve often been holding it together long before things fell apart.

We know that mental and physical health don’t live in separate boxes. They are tangled, messy, and inseparable. And when one breaks down, the other often suffers too.

The Hidden Toll

It’s easy to focus on what can be seen — a hospital stay, a mobility issue, a medication. But what about the mental health toll that comes with chronic illness? What about the anxiety that comes from waiting for test results, or the isolation of being too exhausted to socialise?

And on the other side, what about the physical toll of trauma or long-term stress? Panic attacks. Sleepless nights. Migraines. Digestive issues. Pain that no scan explains.

You don’t need to be “ill enough” or “struggling visibly” to deserve support. Sometimes survival looks like making it to the bathroom. Sometimes it’s remembering your meds. Sometimes it’s just being here at all.

Why We Exist

The Mark Hewitson Foundation was created to provide immediate, practical help to people facing hardship due to mental or physical ill health — or often, both.

We’ve seen people unable to afford a taxi to therapy. Parents going without to pay for children’s uniforms. Survivors of abuse juggling painkillers and PIP assessments in the same week.

We offer small grants — but they’re more than money. They’re recognition. They’re us saying, *We see you. We hear you. You matter.*

The Systems Aren’t Built for This

The truth is, many of the systems people rely on — health, housing, benefits — don’t always account for the full picture. Someone might be too depressed to cook, but “not sick enough” for social care. They might be in constant pain, but told to attend a work capability assessment with no support.

We’re not here to replace those systems. But we are here to bridge the gap when they fail.

What We Believe

– You shouldn’t have to justify your pain.
– You don’t need to pick between feeding your family and attending counselling.
– You deserve support that sees you as a whole person, not a box to be ticked.

Mental health *is* physical health. And physical health *impacts* mental health. That’s not up for debate — it’s lived experience.

How We Can Help

If you’re struggling due to mental or physical ill health, we might be able to help with:

– Transport to appointments
– Emergency essentials like food or clothing
– Help accessing therapy or support services
– Short-term relief while you wait for something else to come through

You don’t need to suffer in silence. We’re here for you, in memory of someone who never wanted anyone to go through it alone.

Final Thoughts

You are not a burden. You are not lazy. You are not weak.

You are doing your best in a world that often asks too much and gives too little. And we are proud of you — even if we’ve never met x
