You can’t always see a disability. But that doesn’t mean it isn’t there.
Hidden disabilities — also called invisible or non-visible disabilities — are conditions that affect a person’s day-to-day life but aren’t obvious to others. These include things like chronic fatigue, autism, bipolar disorder, PTSD, sensory processing issues, and many long-term physical and mental health conditions.
Because they’re not visible, people with hidden disabilities often face extra layers of stigma. They’re told they’re exaggerating, faking, or ‘just anxious.’ They’re expected to keep up, push through, or explain themselves over and over.
And that’s exhausting.
🌿 Examples of Hidden Disabilities:
– Complex PTSD and trauma
– Anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder
– Chronic pain, fibromyalgia, ME/CFS
– Autism, ADHD, dyslexia
– Sensory processing issues
– Autoimmune conditions like lupus or Crohn’s
– Long COVID
– Hearing loss or vision impairment
Many people live with more than one condition — and many are undiagnosed or waiting for support.
💬 “But You Don’t Look Sick”
One of the most painful things someone with a hidden disability can hear. Just because you look ‘fine’ doesn’t mean you’re not struggling. People become experts at masking pain, fatigue, or distress — not because they’re OK, but because the world rarely gives them space to be unwell.
🎗️ Hidden Disabilities Symbols:
– The Sunflower Lanyard is a discreet way to signal you may need more time, support, or patience.

– Many people also carry medical alert cards or exemption badges for travel or access needs.
📢 What Needs to Change:
– Greater understanding and belief in lived experience
– Accessible spaces that don’t rely on visible disability
– More flexible systems: benefits, employment, education, and healthcare
– Compassion — especially when you don’t see the full picture
